‘Inquisitor’ was built in 1969 to Lloyds 100A1 classification by AE Freezer of Hayling Island.  She was commissioned by a millionaire powerboat racer to compete in the 1969 Round Britain powerboat race, and although she was bigger and slower than her competitors, the philosophy behind her design was:

  • Longer fuel range
  • The ability to carry on in poor sea conditions
  • Reliability

She was bought by Ambex in 1980 and has been used to test and demonstrate marine electronic navigation systems.  Her original teak decking was removed some years ago as it was tired and leaking.  We were delighted to be part of her major refit programme which, as well as new synthetic teak decking, encompasses new engines, re-modelled exterior and new paintwork. Inquisitor is currently out of the water and in a covered facility at South Boats IOW, who also carried out her new paintwork. She will be back on the water in June.

Digital Template

Inquisitor was a breakthrough for us as she was templated using digital photography. It was CAD drawn from a proprietary photogrammetric programme which enabled us to create a plan of the deck.  From this plan, we were able to print a full-sized paper template on a large format printer, and using this print-out, our fabricators were able to produce the deck.

Victor Aspey, MCP Marine Managing Director said “It was nerve-racking building a deck without any of the usual pencil drawings taken on-site, but the real test of the technology was that the deck fitted perfectly and looks beautiful.”

Inquisitor was the first boat to be completed using our digital template technology and we would like to thank Ambex for their willingness to take part in this process. We would also like to thank Ambex for supplying some of the images, specifically the ‘before’ images, used in this gallery.
